Hate Crime Prevention Champion

Islington Council have launched the Hate Crime Prevention Champion scheme to upskill Islington’s communities to be confident in raising awareness of hate crime, reporting hate crime and signposting victims to support services. This scheme has been developed in partnership with Islington Hate Crime Forum.

If you have an interest in tackling discrimination and supporting others, and experience of, or an interest in working with community groups, you could become a Hate Crime Champion.

Champions will raise awareness of hate crime and promote the reporting of hate incidents or crime.

What does a Hate Crime Prevention Champion do?
• Encourage the reporting of hate crime/hate incidents
• Promote community understanding and awareness of
hate crime, e.g. by distributing leaflets and attending
hate crime events Identify when a hate crime may have
occurred
• Identify when a hate crime may have occurred
• Support victims to report hate crime and signpost them
to support services
• Engage with the work delivered by the Islington Hate
Crime Forum Deliver at least three hate crime activities
a year, this could include community engagement
events or training sessions

You will receive free online training from the Hate Crime Forum and will get access to free resources such as leaflets and posters.

You are not required to volunteer for a certain number of hours, or regularly report back on how you're raising awareness of hate crime. We simply ask you to let us know if you have attended an event to raise awareness of hate crime, or distributed leaflets in your community.

Free online hate crime training provided by Islington Hate Crime Forum. Free hate crime resources including leaflets and posters. Access to advice from Islington Hate Crime Forum. Access to news and updates from Islington Hate Crime Forum.

No set hours. We ask you to engage in at least 3 hate crime awareness activities per year. This could include attending an event to raise awareness of hate crime or distributing leaflets in your community.
