What you will be doing

Newcastle Community Transport is a small charity organisation, established in 1974, which provides a door to door transport service for people in the Newcastle and surrounding areas who have mobility problems. We have two 12-seater, wheelchair-accessible minibuses and a car which has wheelchair access and seats for two carers. We provide trips to places such as: Clubs, Supermarkets, Meals Out, theaters, medical appointments & Visitor Centers. We provide full training to our volunteer drivers in the use of our vehicles and the care and safety of our passengers.

The driving role is not suitable for anyone who is not fit and able to drive a non adapted vehicle. Manual handling applies to supporting wheelchair users up and down curbs if necessary and the use of the tail lift for wheelchair access to passengers.

How Long Do I Have To Volunteer For?

You need to commit to a regular volunteering opportunity of around an hour a week. The table below shows the commitment required for each level of the DofE.

Bronze

Minimum time: 3 or 6 months

You must do one of your volunteering, Physical or Skills sections for 6 months, the others for 3.

Silver

Minimum time: 6 or 12 months

If you heven't achieved your Bronze Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 12 months.

Gold

Minimum time: 12 or 18 months

If you heven't achieved your Silver Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 18 months.
