We are looking for people of any age who can spare an hour or two a week (can be fortnightly) to spend some time with a lonely older person. This varies from taking them out for walks, or lunch, to simply popping in for a cup of tea and a chat. This service has grown since the pandemic and we already have a waiting list. It is a really rewarding way of volunteering and we give an induction, training and support to our volunteers. If you're interested and want to spend some time helping out in your local community please do contact us and we'd happy to talk through the role and how it can fit in with your busy lives!

Befriending, Buddying & Mentoring

People Skills

Most important is an ability to get on with people, kindness, patience and someone who can listen and stimulate conversation. A driving licence is not necessary, although if you want to take the clients out many have mobility problems and can't walk very far so it would be helpful. Most of our clients live within a 5 minute walk of a bus stop or train station so this role can be done without a car. However most of those in need of befriending are not able to get out, and live alone, so it's mostly about providing company

Improved mental health... helping others is a great way to feel more positive. Transferable skills if you are looking to get into a role supporting the elderly or in health or social care. Access to a wider group of volunteers who can help and support you in your role.

Ideally 1 hour a week as for many of our clients having a regular visitor / routine is essential for them. But that can be 1 or 2 hours a fortnight if easier to arrange. We also ask people to sign up for a minimum of 6 months if possible. Visits usually take place Monday - Friday between 10-4pm. However it may be possible to arrange them in an evening, so after work, or on a Saturday or Sunday if that is your preference ( subject to the clients agreement)

Further location details may be provided below.

Volunteer Centre  Support you will receive

Given this role requires volunteers to visit elderly people, usually in their homes, it is essential that volunteers can manage to get the address and access the property unaided. However we would love to hear from you, and are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments or adaptations that would support you in this role.
