What you will be doing

Sight loss can take away independence and confidence, and leave those affected isolated. Berkshire Vision supports hundreds of blind and partially sighted children and adults, helping them to live their lives to the full.
As a telephone befriender, you will be matched with a Berkshire Vision Member for a weekly phone call.
The aim of your phone call is to provide a friendly chat. It's not counselling or advice but friendly conversation. You will ask the Member about their week, and prompt conversation topics when necessary. Most calls last around 30 minutes.
Please note that applicants for this position need to be aged 18 or over. Our application procedure consists of an application form and 2 references.

Skills Description

We are looking for people who are good listeners and genuinely interested in other people’s stories. A cheerful disposition is a plus. You will need to be diligent, as we rely on our volunteers to make the phone call every week.

What is in it for you

You will enjoy supporting someone with sight loss so they feel less isolated. Hopefully you will also enjoy the chats. No prior experience is required as you will be given training before starting the calls.

Around 30 minutes per week.

How Long Do I Have To Volunteer For?

You need to commit to a regular volunteering opportunity of around an hour a week. The table below shows the commitment required for each level of the DofE.

Bronze

Minimum time: 3 or 6 months

You must do one of your volunteering, Physical or Skills sections for 6 months, the others for 3.

Silver

Minimum time: 6 or 12 months

If you heven't achieved your Bronze Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 12 months.

Gold

Minimum time: 12 or 18 months

If you heven't achieved your Silver Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 18 months.
