Those who rescue, give first aid and medical attention to unwell or injured casualties need to practice and perfect their knowledge and techniques.

Our role is to provide trained acting, made-up ‘casualties’ on whom they can safely do this; in doing so our perception of the care received will be fed back to improve the training of those carrying out the First Aid.

We create the illusion of illness or injury, from a faint to a heart attack, from cuts and abrasions to a protruding broken bone. We study how the victim would behave, acting with appropriate posture, facial expression and speech.

We respond to how we are treated by providing vital feedback both during the scenarios or role-play and in any debrief session afterwards.

Since our foundation in 1942 we have undoubtedly, indirectly improved the outcome of many real emergencies and saved lives.

Our branches and study circles welcome new members and their training meetings introduce them to our techniques, and develop the skills of the more experienced members.

We are asked to attend a variety of duties and exercises such as paramedic and fire service training, major traffic incident exercises, first aid competitions, hospital emergency training, television programs, airport exercises and urban search and rescue training.

On going Training Sessions are held in Reading, fortnightly, 8pm to 10pm. Attending the training is optional and a full induction will be given

Under 18 year olds can volunteer with us so long as they are chaperoned/ with a parent or guardian. There is a specific Junior Member training plan for people of this age and junior trainees/ members are always welcomed to our training nights

We are looking for people from all walks of life and backgrounds, including disabilities, who have the time and commitment to help our first responders and medics, practice and perfect their incident response skills. No previous knowledge or skills regarding casualty simulation is required as you will receive training on acting, make-up and staging at our local unit. It helps, however, if you are skilled with your hands, have done some acting or first aid training. As a volunteer, our training or duties may be outdoors and could require you to act as a casualty in colder weather conditions. Your health and safety is always a priority however.

You will learn about acting medical conditions and about special effects makeup. Our makeup includes materials you can find in your kitchen all the way up to Silicone and Gelatine prosthetics of a quality used in the film and TV industry. Those with disabilities are welcome , and for duties we will endeavour to make suitable adjustments. Make up artists will be invaluable and it is an excellent experience for trainees in this field, as well as those at University.

Our training meetings are twice a month on Fridays from 8pm to 10pm. We hope members will be able to do at least two duties a year. Many of our members love it so much that they do as many as they can.
