Infant Feeding Peer Support Volunteer

National Childbirth Trust

You did not enter a postcode in the search, or the postcode for this role is unknown.

NCT is commissioned by Hackney Council to train and coordinate mothers who have lived experience of breastfeeding to offer skilled, volunteer parent to parent infant feeding support across the Hackney area.

Infant feeding peer support is delivered by our specially trained peer supporters who provide social, emotional, and practical support to pregnant and new mums, both during pregnancy and once baby arrives.

Peer supporters are mums themselves who live in the local area and have lived experience of pregnancy, raising a child and everything in between. They receive accredited training through the programme enabling them to be non-judgmental, empathic and very good listeners.

We provide peer support via three main routes:

* At Homerton Hospital Maternity Ward - Supporting parents in the hours and days post birth, often with their first experiences of breastfeeding. Offering a listening ear and giving information on a range of topics and signposting to the local support once they leave hospital.

* Via telephone - Supporting parents within 48 hours and then two weeks of discharge home from hospital. Offering support via telephone, a listening ear and giving information and signposting mothers to local support options.

* At peer led support groups - Supporting parents in one of our local groups (free drop-in support for all pregnant and breastfeeding families) based in Hackney. Offering a listening ear, giving information on a range of topics, and facilitating social support.

The course can be held online or our planned in-person training at Stamford Hill and consists of 9 weeks training. There will also be homework time (usually 1 hour per week). On satisfactory completion of your workbook, you will receive an OCN accredited qualification in peer supporting.

If you are ready to commit to this course, as well as giving approximately two hours per week volunteering as a breastfeeding peer supporter for at least six months post training, we welcome your application.
