The role of a Hate Crime Champion is:
- A voluntary role for community members and organisations across the borough.
- To act as a point of contact in the community, organisations or business for anyone wanting to discuss a hate incident or crime and to seek advice. This will be supported by the Hate Crime Lead Officer.
- To provide initial advice to those that may fall victim of discrimination motivated by hate.
- A network of diverse members of our community able to provide support to victims of hate incidents/crimes with a higher level of knowledge of the impact of hateful behaviour.
- Able to signpost victims to relevant and appropriate services.
- To share information to victims or witnesses during the initial stages or reporting their experience, with guidance as to the reporting processes available.
- To liaise with the Hate Crime Lead Officer, to support the gathering of information of where incidents/crimes may be taking place.
- To meet periodically with the Hate Crime Lead Officer to receive updates and key messages on how hate incidents/crimes are being dealt with across Hackney.
- To attend training events (when appropriate) to ensure they are kept up to date with information about our hate crime/incidents policy and any legislative developments.
- To ensure that hate crime information is displayed and available, by way of posters and leaflets.
- To deliver at least 3 community engagement events over the course of the year to identified community groups, with support from the Hate Crime Lead Officer.
- To provide feedback on community concerns which have been highlighted through engagement with them.
- To share key information about hate incidents/crimes with the wider community to ensure that information is relevant and up-to-date
- To ensure supporting information is displayed and/or available for community members (posters and leaflets etc).
- To support victims of All hate incidents/crimes, impartially, across the monitored strands.
