What you will be doing

We need volunteers to support our friendly & informal weekly Kitchen Club at the Round Chapel Old School Rooms!

Kitchen Club is an opportunity for families to cook, eat, play and learn together. Once a week, local parents with pre-school children work together to make a healthy lunch with low-cost ingredients. At the same time, creative play and learning activities are organised for parents and children, such as crafting or storytelling. When the food is ready, everyone sits down to eat together, before helping to tidy up.

Between 8 and 16 families attend each session. The majority are from low-income households, and we give priority to families who live in temporary accommodation.

We aim to tailor responsibilities to each volunteer’s interests, but, in general, volunteers to help with:
• Setting up and tidying away play equipment
• Food preparation for the group meal
• Participating in the pre-session briefing and end of session debrief
• Ensuring that families are included and made to feel welcome
• Preparing resources for family activities
• Supporting play and learning activities within the session

Sessions operate as drop-ins, with families arriving from 12pm. The session finishes at 2pm.

Ideally, volunteers will be available from 11am to support with setting up the delivery space and attend the pre-session team briefing. The end of session debrief finishes no later than 3pm.

This opportunity would suit someone who loves working with food and families, and who enjoys being an active part of their local community. Although no previous experience is required, skills in customer service, catering and/or childcare would be helpful for this role.

Volunteers receive accredited training in safeguarding and food hygiene. Great experience for those looking to progress into catering, childcare, social work, counselling, etc. Our model is based on supporting good wellbeing through social connection & nutrition. We use a trauma-informed approach, and aim to gently encourage parents to develop the skills which support home learning. Volunteers are welcome to join our team training sessions on these approaches.

Time Commitment

11am – 3pm, with some flexibility if volunteer availability is limited
