What you will be doing

Make a real difference to your community:
People living with a serious, long-term or terminal illness often struggle with loneliness and could do with some extra support. Compassionate Neighbours can really make a difference. They are a network of trained volunteers who are willing to offer their time, companionship and support to people living in their community who are coping with serious illness.

Compassionate Neighbours can help others by: • Offering companionship, emotional support and a listening ear • Providing practical support, such as making a cup of tea • Helping them to stay connected to their friends and the community • Directing them to important support services to help them get through this difficult time.

What is in it for you

The Training Our training courses are informal, fun and inspirational. We give you the opportunity to explore how you can use your compassion to help others and give you the confidence to support people in your community. You'll develop skills and meet other like-minded Compassionate Neighbours. All training is held at St Joseph's Hospice, is provided free of charge and includes refreshments and lunch. Once you have completed an application form, we will ask you to sign up to one of the courses

How Long Do I Have To Volunteer For?

You need to commit to a regular volunteering opportunity of around an hour a week. The table below shows the commitment required for each level of the DofE.

Bronze

Minimum time: 3 or 6 months

You must do one of your volunteering, Physical or Skills sections for 6 months, the others for 3.

Silver

Minimum time: 6 or 12 months

If you heven't achieved your Bronze Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 12 months.

Gold

Minimum time: 12 or 18 months

If you heven't achieved your Silver Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 18 months.
