What will I be doing?
As a result of the recent disruption, pupils from impoverished backgrounds have been pushed behind more than ever. That’s why we are asking you to help us tackle the huge educational impacts of the pandemic, to help children who desperately need our help. With no travel, it is now the lowest time commitment ever to join our programmes!.
As a participant on our programme, you will provide high-impact tuition to young people from low-income backgrounds, helping to tackle educational inequality in London. Equipped with full training and detailed resources, you will tutor a small group of pupils who are currently underperforming and provide them with the academic support, encouragement and inspiration they need to get back on track.
Tuition sessions last from 60 - 90 minutes a week, with a wide range of times and days available. You will provide the tuition over a ten week programme, supported by a dedicated Programme Manager.
Personal development benefits of the programme include:
A mentor from a career sector of interest, whether you are looking to excel in your current profession, considering a career change or wish to gain a place at an educational establishment
A personal statement
Logged volunteering hours and teaching experience
developing leadership, teaching and communication skills and demonstrating these competencies to employers with real-life examples
An optional accredited leadership qualification
access to personal development seminars
What impact will this have?
Meaningfully increase your pupils' academic grades: pupils on our most recently analysed programme showed, on average, 50% more improvement than the national average in English and maths.
Improve your pupils' self-esteem: 87% of pupils agreed that they felt more confident in the subject in which they received tuition.
75% of our tutors felt the programme made a difference to the young people they work with: “Thank you for creating such amazing opportunities for both students and tutors. [As a Team Up tutor] your hard work really makes a difference and it’s such a rewarding experience”.
You will also be helping to alleviate the disproportionate impact the pandemic has had on children from low-income backgrounds.
The commitment is 90 minutes a week for ten weeks, over the Autumn term. We have around 20 programmes on different days and at different times, so you can choose a slot that suits you.
What else do I need to know?
By joining this programme, you will connect with a growing and active community of people helping to create a fairer education system for young people in the UK and have the opportunity to develop your skills, enhance your employability and expand your professional networks. Our career mentor scheme and ongoing support for volunteers has helped many of our previous volunteers secure placements, university places or career changes.
We are looking for passionate individuals who are keen to support a growing movement to help tackle educational equality.
We would like applicants to be organised, punctual, and have some experience in the subject they wish to tutor.
