Carers Link Volunteer - Befriending

To visit older, isolated or bereaved carers at home, to provide companionship, stimulation, enjoy small activities, and to build confidence for the carer to reconnect with the outside world.

Volunteers will not be giving personal care, shopping or household chores, etc.

Key Responsibilities
• Attend initial induction training and on-going training and support sessions (monthly)
• Visiting your matched carer at the agreed frequency for up to 12 weeks, usually weekly
• Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries
• Engaging with your matched carer, offering warm companionship, active listening and conversation
• Engage in activities that are mutually agreed, and where appropriate, encouraging your matched carer to attend social groups e.g. coffee mornings, one off-events, if they feel they would like to (supporting any goals they may have set)
• Inform the Carers Link Coordinator of any concerns about the carer
• Provide a brief summary of each meeting with the carer to the Carers Link Coordinator by email
• Respecting the carer’s confidentiality even in difficult situations

• Good communication skills • A caring, sensitive manner and a non-judgemental approach, patience, tact and empathy • Reliable and consistent • Ability to understand and maintain professional boundaries • Willingness and confidence to work without direct supervision on your own in the community
