Abbey’s Community Café is a buzzing pop-up cafe with positive change at its heart. Every Saturday we pop-up and serve delicious, healthy, affordable food to local people 11am-2pm and provide a hub for the local community to come together.

As a Café Helper you will be part of our brilliant team responsible for welcoming, hosting and serving our lovely customers and helping to make sure that the cafe runs smoothly, is always clean and tidy and has a positive, friendly atmosphere.

Responsibilities include:

Welcoming people to Abbey's Community Café and providing a friendly and positive first point of contact

Taking customer orders

Serving hot and cold drinks and food to tables, involving carrying a tray

Helping set-up and close-down of cafe

Washing up

Ensuring stocks maintained, receive deliveries and store appropriately

Clearing tables, keeping cafe tidy, clean and maintaining high quality presentation standards

Use of the till to calculate and take customer payments and give change

Performing general cleaning tasks in accordance with cleaning rota

Bus number 31 stops directly outside. 139 and 189 are also very close. Nearest stations are West Hampstead and Swiss Cottage on Jubilee Line, Kilburn High Road on the Overground or Kilburn Park on the Bakerloo.

You will need to be available on Saturdays between 10am and 3pm. Shifts are 10am-1pm, 12noon-3pm or both. We also need help on Friday mornings between 10am-1pm with the prepping of the food and the cafe for the next day. No matter what shifts you do all volunteers are invited to have lunch together around 2pm on Saturday if you would like to join us. We ask people to commit to at least 12 sessions over a year. You can do these sessions however you like - for example, once a month, or condensed into a shorter time such as weekly or every other week. No previous cafe experience is necessary for this role, but you will need to be friendly and happy talking to a wide range of people and able to provide a high standard of customer service. We are looking for people who are: Honest and trustworthy Reliable and punctual Have good communication skills Have a patient and positive manner Good spoken English skills and numeracy skills if helping on till Have a good attention to detail Able to pick up detailed instructions quickly and follow them closely Ability to remain calm under pressure of a busy café environment Enjoy working as part of a team Be willing to learn Good personal hygiene

In return you will receive lots of yummy lunches, smiles from your community, full induction and training, and a friendly staff and volunteer family. You will also receive a reference after successful completion of 12 sessions. We can also help with employability skills and confidence building if you would like. We can also provide Food Hygiene training and help you to work towards a formal qualification.
