The time commitment for school governors will vary. However, there are at least eight meetings of the full board per year and a full term of office lasts four years. Good attendance at meetings is expected, however governors can be excused for unavoidable personal and professional commitments. Usually governors also sit on a committee focused on an area they have knowledge of, or are particularly interested in – for example, the Resources Committee. Committees generally meet up to three times a year. Every meeting requires some degree of preparation, which includes reading papers and preparing questions for senior leaders. You will also be expected to undertake any training required to enable you to discharge your role effectively. Support will be provided and we offer a buddy system where more experienced governors mentor newer board members. Governors are expected to undertake ad hoc visits to the school while it is open as and when required. Generally these are minimal.
