About the Role

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our Squirrels section (for children aged 4–6). Our Squirrels group was created about 18 months ago and was the first in the County.

As a Squirrel Leader or Assistant Squirrel Leader, you’ll help provide a safe, fun, and adventurous programme that inspires young people, builds confidence, and develops skills for life.

Whether leading the section or supporting the leadership team, you’ll play a vital role in giving children new experiences, helping them earn badges, and encouraging teamwork and friendship.

What You’ll Do:

* Plan, deliver, and support exciting activities, games, and challenges suitable for 4–6 year-olds.
* Create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all Squirrels.
* Supervise and support children during weekly meetings, trips, and camps.
* Work with other volunteers to ensure a balanced and fun programme.
* Encourage Squirrels to progress on to Beavers when they turn 6.
* Build positive relationships with parents, helpers, and the Group Scout Leader.
* (As Squirrel Leader) Take overall responsibility for running the Colony and guiding the team.
* (As Squirrel Leader) Support the Leader and step in when needed.

What We’re Looking For:

* Enthusiasm and energy for working with young children.
* Good communication and teamwork skills.
* Reliability, patience, and a sense of fun.
* Organisational or leadership ability (especially for the Leader role).
* A commitment to safeguarding and wellbeing.

What’s in it for You?

* The chance to make a real difference in young people’s lives.
* Develop your own skills in leadership, teamwork, and planning.
* Be part of a friendly volunteer team with plenty of support and training.
* Lots of fun and laughter along the way!

Outdoor Activities & Adventure Skills: * Camping & Hiking: Training in outdoor skills, campsite management, and risk assessment. * Water Activities: Permits for canoeing, kayaking, or water rafting through BCU (British Canoeing) or Scout permits. * Climbing & Abseiling: Indoor and outdoor climbing training, including safety, belaying, and first aid. * Hillwalking / Expedition Leadership: Training for longer walks or overnight trips. 2.
