What you will be doing

The Boatmaster is a volunteer who is licenced by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, who has overall responsibility for all legal and safety aspects of the boat whilst passengers are on board. It is a key safety role, and a position of responsibility.
Most of our boatmasters have started as cabin or deck crew, and undertaken MCA training during their time as a volunteer. We also seek volunteers who have qualified elsewhere and hold a Boatmasters Licence issued by the MCA.
Volunteers Boatmasters should be able to commit to at least 3 shifts of 4-6 hours per month from April until October. Full familiarisation of the boat, and the BMK Waterway Trust, will be part of the induction process.

How Long Do I Have To Volunteer For?

You need to commit to a regular volunteering opportunity of around an hour a week. The table below shows the commitment required for each level of the DofE.

Bronze

Minimum time: 3 or 6 months

You must do one of your volunteering, Physical or Skills sections for 6 months, the others for 3.

Silver

Minimum time: 6 or 12 months

If you heven't achieved your Bronze Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 12 months.

Gold

Minimum time: 12 or 18 months

If you heven't achieved your Silver Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 18 months.
