We will be running a 20 bed winter nightshelter from the 2nd December 2024 to the 11th of March 2025.
As we prepare to reopen at 56 Harpur Street on 2nd December 2024, we are committed to providing shelter, support, and hope to our guests for 100 days with particular focus on long term wrap-around support.
We need 100 people to volunteer for either morning, evening, or sleep-in-support shifts at the shelter, over the 14 weeks we will be open.

You can volunteer for one evening a week or more, or less. We’re happy to have a conversation to consider your availability.
The shift times are:
Morning: 7am-8.30am
Evening: 7pm-10.30/11pm
Sleep-in-support: 10.45pm-7.15am

Evening Volunteer Role To support the shift leader in running a welcoming and safe space for rough sleepers seeking shelter for the night · Help prepare sleeping area as directed by shift leader · Help heat up food as directed by shift leader · Welcome guests · Help maintain a calm and friendly environment · Serve guests warm food and drinks · Play games, have conversation with guests · Report any issues or needs guests my raise with the shift leader · Be watchful for any medical concerns and raise with shift leader · Report any safeguarding concerns to shift leader · Help settle guests for sleeping Overnight Sleep –in support Volunteer Role To support night security in ensuring a peaceful and safe night for guests · Ensure everyone is in sleeping area and settled for the night · Sleep in secure room upstairs – on hand if night security requires advice/support including if a guest arrives during the night · Preparing kitchen area for breakfast · Handing over any significant information to breakfast team Morning Volunteer Venue 56 Harpur Street, Bedford, MK40 2QT Role To assist the shift leader in providing breakfast and preparing guests for the day · Help wake guests ready for breakfast · Serve breakfast to guests · Help maintain a friendly and calm environment · Help guests prepare for the day by giving appropriate information for their needs · Help tidy the sleeping area and Kitchen ready for the evening

A great opportunity to be part of a team that is providing emergency shelter for some of the most vulnerable in our town. You will develop your skills of welcoming a broad range of guests to the service, help create a friendly atmosphere and practically be involved in serving food, playing games and spending time with our guests. There will be opportunity to develop your active listening skills, empathy and to broaden your knowledge base of working with those who find themselves homeless. Training will be provided in regards to assessment, mental health, substance misuse, food hygiene, professional boundaries and a framework of understanding around active listening skills and being trauma informed.

The shift times are: Morning: 7am-8.30am Evening: 7pm-10.30/11pm Sleep-in-support: 10.45pm-7.15am

First 4 Hrs free Up to 5 Hrs £1.30 Up to 6 Hrs £1.90 Up to 7 Hrs £3.40 Up to 8 Hrs £4.20 Over 8 Hrs £7.80 Cash and card payment accepted Chargeable hours Monday - Saturday 8.30am - 6pm Free parking: After 6.00pm (Mon - Sat) First 4 Hrs Sunday Seven parking spaces are available at the back of the property- Cross Street. For an overnight shift the volunteer and the security guard will be able to park at the rear of the building.

The property has a step free access from the front of the building. There is a ramp to access the main office, an accessible toilet on the ground floor and a lift onto the first floor where the guests will sleep. A space can be reserved at the back of the building for someone with disability or access requirements.
