What you will be doing

We are developing a new activities volunteer role within our charity. Traditionally we have recruited 1-to-1 volunteers or befrienders. However, we are aware this does not work for everyone, usually because of the type or regularity of commitment. So we are also looking for people who want to spend time with groups of care home residents in the public lounge area by participating in activities and entertainment. You could volunteer individually or as a small group, such as singers and musicians. Or perhaps you like to knit, draw, read poetry or do crafts, quizzes, puzzles or word searches with residents. If you feel that you can contribute to the wellbeing of care home residents in any of these types of ways, please contact us for more information.

Skills Description

Good communication skills and patience are often required as many residents have dementia. Skills in music, poetry, or arts and crafts would be advantageous.

Time Commitment

The frequency of visits is to be negotiated by you, FFL and the care home. A solid commitment is required that you will be able to attend as planned.

Volunteers should not visit care homes if they are infectious in any way. Local care home rules must be followed and adhered to.

How Long Do I Have To Volunteer For?

You need to commit to a regular volunteering opportunity of around an hour a week. The table below shows the commitment required for each level of the DofE.

Bronze

Minimum time: 3 or 6 months

You must do one of your volunteering, Physical or Skills sections for 6 months, the others for 3.

Silver

Minimum time: 6 or 12 months

If you heven't achieved your Bronze Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 12 months.

Gold

Minimum time: 12 or 18 months

If you heven't achieved your Silver Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 18 months.
