What you will be doing

To support the Music Vocal Specialist with running music/singing sessions for aphasic clients. This role includes general support (e.g., encouraging engagement, giving out equipment where applicable etc.) and using Zoom (sharing screen, muting/unmuting participants and scrolling down the lyrics).

The session may begin with a music quiz, so helping the Specialist identify who got the answer etc. may also be involved. This role includes helping tidy at the end of the session and assisting clients to leave, as well as helping clients with drinks etc. where applicable.

Ideally, the volunteer would also be comfortable running the group during Specialist absences (alongside a member of headway staff). This would likely involved asking the room for song choices and finding appropriate songs on YouTube to play. You would not be expected to make a session on a similar level to the Specialist, but clients would still get enjoyment out of it. As such, an interest in music would be beneficial. Staff would provide guidance in these scenarios.

Skills Description

Anyone with patience and IT skills would suit this role. Some understanding of Zoom and Word would be beneficial, but training will be provided. Clients have communication difficulties. Training will be provided, however patience and understanding is beneficial. An interest in music is beneficial.

Directions

Access the site from the southern entrance (next to Charter House). The centre is located straight ahead, passed the old Shire House building (burnt down, now surrounded by blue fencing), following the road to the right. Headway is located inside John Bunyan House (next to the Dental Access Centre) on the ground floor. There is a bus stop nearby.
