What you will be doing

The main purpose of this role is to work with clients with acquired brain injury in a '1 to 1' setting to complete a variety of activities related to cookery. This may involve all steps in the process from choosing recipes to cook, putting together a shopping list, preparation of the kitchen area prior to cooking, following recipes and cleaning up afterwards. This includes supporting clients to follow basic food hygiene and food safety at all times, as well as making use of and trialing adaptive equipment.

All sessions take place in our kitchen on-site.

Clients will have had a kitchen assessment with our Occupational Therapist prior to starting their sessions with a volunteer.

We have two groups:
1. Microwave Cookery - involves cooking fresh meals from scratch using a microwave as a means of cooking.

2. Kitchen Skills - involves cooking fresh meals, from scratch, using an oven and/or hob as a means of cooking.

These sessions run one morning or afternoon, one day per week for 7 weeks for each client referred.

These sessions will the directed by a member of staff.

Skills Description

Cooking experience ideal but not required. Teaching clients basic cooking skills, using equipment we will brief you on, and following simple recipes.

This role also offers practical experience for those who have theoretical experience (for example, from a Psychology degree). Training is provided (e.g. health and safety, safeguarding etc.). Learning new skills (for example, improving communication with others, learning non-verbal communication; admin skills; reporting information, etc.) Opportunities to socialise with other volunteers. Regular volunteer meetings - have your voice heard. A "feel good" factor from: - Helping clients and seeing their progress - Having a positive involvement in their rehabilitation.

Time Commitment

Cooking is 1:1 for clients, with each client completing 1 session per week for 4 or 5 weeks. Ideally, volunteers should be available throughout those weeks. Volunteers who support with cooking would support different clients over time, so long-term volunteering is ideal.

Directions
