In addition to responding to emergencies Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) undertakes other activities which reduce risks in the community and helps to keep people, environments and property safer.
These activities include Home Fire Safety Visits undertaken in people’s homes, encompassing home safety assessments, personal lifestyle and wellbeing checks; sharing information at public events; giving safety talks; and distributing information at community locations. There is a clear relationship between the amount of prevention work we undertake and the number of fires in the community.
Volunteers are a valuable way to increase the contact and communications we have with the general public from a range of cultures, faiths and seldom reached communities in Bedfordshire.
We have volunteer opportunities in face-to-face engagement, targeted event organisation and attendance, public speaking, placing informational literature in community locations and keeping it topped up. We are seeking to actively engage with all faiths, cultures and ages in the most appropriate and respectful way.
This role is flexible and the volunteer can agree which aspects suit their personal preferences, needs and skillset.

Would suit someone with experience in dealing with enquiries and providing informational literature to the public in a public or community venue. Sales or retail experience could be useful. The volunteers must be confident in dealing with people on a face to face basis.

We are aiming to ask volunteers to work as close to the centre of their own community as possible. The benefit to the volunteer is that they will be using the skills they possess to help their community be a safer place and to have helped reduce accidents, injuries or even death from fire in the home. We will provide training and access to a range of opportunities for personal growth and development.
