Mentoring adults with drug and alcohol issues who have reached a point in their recovery where they are motivated to make positive changes in their lives, some of whom may have multiple/complex needs, providing practical support and constructive activities to help our clients make positive lifestyle changes.

Our approach is ‘person-centred’, i.e. tailored to fit the specific needs of the client. As such, each mentor/client relationship will be unique. Mentors may be supporting individuals who may be facing multiple challenges e.g. housing, employment, financial, social.

Volunteers are a crucial part of the CLI team – they are our driving force for helping people to turn their lives around. We're looking for confident, outgoing, reliable and resourceful individuals able to volunteer as a mentor for a minimum of 4-6 hours a week at a time mutually agreed by both mentor and mentee.

Mentoring takes place in the community in public places.

You will be offered 3 consecutive days of training which will include safeguarding, risk, confidentiality and how to build an effective mentoring relationship maintaining professional boundaries and setting goals. Due to the level of training provided and the nature of the role, we would hope that Volunteers are able to commit to the role for at least 6 months.

Travel expenses are reimbursed.

No formal qualifications/experience are required, however volunteer Mentors would need to be willing/able to ensure clients work progressively and effectively to reach agreed goals. Life experience and/or strong interest in supporting adults is a real advantage. We recruit and train volunteers from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds and we actively welcome volunteers with lived experience of drug, alcohol, offending, mental health, homelessness and isolation.

This role offers a level of responsibility few other voluntary roles can. It also gives Mentors the benefits of preliminary training and continuing support from an Investors in People organisation, plus the opportunity to gain the skills and experience needed to pursue a career within fields such as criminal justice and substance misuse. We offer safeguarding training and opportunities for further training in relevant areas. All mentors receive regular monthly supervision, team meetings and ongoing support.
